Falls Festival 2008/2009 -Part 1

As Australian’s celebrated the New Year, they were also baffled by the disappearance of two Victorian boys who decided to sneak into the Falls Festival. Many confused and disgruntled residents wondered why on earth anyone would attempt to bush bash into the three day festival. Well, anyone who has been to the Falls Festival knows exactly why: it’ll be the dirtiest, most bizarre smelling and awesome three days of camping you’ll perhaps ever have as I discovered this year.

Lots of Cars!DAY 1:
As Falls Festival neophytes who opted for the more traditional way of entering the festival (i.e. purchasing tickets), my boyfriend and I awaited the Festival for months. Then finally, the fateful day arrived when we were able to load up my little Hyundai with junk food and camping supplies and drive him down the coast to Lorne. Surprised by our speedy journey, at ten thirty am we decided to beat the crowds and head on up to Erskine Falls where the gates to the Festival site were to open at 11am. Instead, a line of at least 50 or so vehicles lay before us, with more filing into the windy bush road by the second. Great minds, I suppose.

Falls Festival Site - day 1

Though all we had was an issue of Cosmo and a barely coherent radio signal to entertain us, we patiently waited in line as cars were ‘searched’ and excitement mounted.  We eventually progressed to the front of the cue, were handed our rubbish and recycling bags and were directed into the festival campgrounds – magnificent, untouched grassy rolling hills. After briefly pondering all the amounts of alcohol we could have snuck in considering our car was one of the lucky ones not searched, we set up camp, made a toilet stop at the eco-friendly composting toilets and headed on up to the main arena to do what we came to do: watch some music!

Tinpan Orange eased us into the festival as the very first act. However, it wasn’t until Ash Grunwald took to the stage that we were aroused from our tired stupor and truly entertained by his grunting guiAsh Grunwaldtar and soulful voice.  Fleet Foxes managed to draw a larger crowd as they were blessed with the afternoon slot. With their melodic harmonies and the helpful aid of alcohol, they managed to hypnotise the masses into forgetting everything but the sweet sounds flooding their ear canals. At the end of the day, British India entertained a very cold and wet crowd until many retreated back to their tents whee the party continued and they prepared for the events of Day 2.
